Your Roadmap, Your Primer, and More
Finding your way around a new neighborhood can sometimes be confusing. Even more so when new developments keep popping up regularly.
Voilà! Your primer!
Getting around has never been easier! Use the Search Box at the top of any page. Can’t remember where I mentioned Chef José Andrés? Drop his name into the box and head right to the articles that include him!
Consider our Features page the Table of Contents for this site.
Below each category there’s a brief description of the content you’ll find within it. Clicking on the section title brings you to summaries of and links to the articles themselves. And NOW you can add your comments at the end of every post! Join the conversation and add your own food for thought!
Keep on reading to explore more of what you’ll find in each category.
And check back to this article often as changes appear.
Ready! Set! Start Here with “Some Basics”!
As the name suggests, here is a great place to start navigating this website.
In addition to the article you’re reading right now, please review the Terms of Service; privacy commitment; review policy; and affiliate statement. By continuing, you acknowledge and accept these. There may be changes down the road. So, give it a reread and watch for any relevant social media updates.
You’ll also find some additional tidbits about yours truly.
Not a public therapy session or tell-all, these include answers to those questions people often ask me about me. Hey! Who doesn’t like sneaking a peek behind the curtain to see what the Wizard of Odd is really all about?
Foodstuffs … Because I Love Food!
“Foodstuff” is defined as any substance that is used as food or to make food. In other words, it’s anything edible that made it to your mouth and the tools that helped get it there.
That covers a lot of ground! And so will we!
Foodstuffs is the place for fun facts from the culinary world. In addition, you’ll find recipes and edibles* to enjoy along with cooking techniques, ingredients, and products.
While suggestions for the last two are offered along with cookbooks, the emphasis is always on information and entertainment. Therefore, expect most of the article links to lead you to experts in the kitchen and outside of it!

Musings & Miscellany: Passion Beyond the Plate
My passion for quotes, history, trivia, and the like, extends far beyond the boundaries of the culinary world. So does my endless curiosity with … well … curiosities. Look no further for articles exploring these!
No surprise, I’m also something of a news junkie. However, don’t look for polemics on politics or items featured on the front page of your local newspaper. Instead, do expect to find occasional compilations of those aforementioned curiosities—Call them my musings.
And the musings articles begin with What’s Wonderful and Weird—a sampling of things found in the news and/or my meandering thoughts of the day. Some will have an epicurean twist. Others simply pique my curiosity. And expect that flair for irreverent reference to pop up, too.
What’s Cool will occasionally be featured. It will include everything from products for the pantry to the kitchen and beyond. It’s where we cherry-pick our favorites for you.
Given my love of books, there’ll be reading suggestions. What We’re Reading features popular fiction and nonfiction; some classics; and a cookbook or two.
Certainly expect a look under the lid of what’s cooking in the kitchen! What We’re Eating serves up a recipe featuring fare from fellow foodies.
And, of course, we’d never forget the kiddos!
Arts & Letters
As mentioned elsewhere, long before Ian Makay came along, I was a regular contributor to H.W. Wilson’s reference series titles Current Biography, World Authors, and World Artists. Less inspired and more the expected, compressed, factual, reference summation of a well-lived life, I won’t be replicating that here.
What you can expect is a livelier and often irreverent reference treatment of authors, artists, and assorted creatives featured in word, art, cartoons, and photography across my social media platforms. You may never look at some of these folks the same way again!
The Reference Room
Before technology brought information into our homes and phones, there were libraries—My happy place for many years! The Reference Room examines the various aspects and challenges of getting things right or consistent as a reference writer.
Sound dry?
NOT!!!
Articles here strive to be informative while keeping that irreverent reference flavor you’ve come to enjoy. So, expect some smiles. And, if these tasty tidbits make anyone a more savvy consumer of information—Call it a huge win for truth!
Pass the Plate
Pass the Plate posts are about making a difference in your community and the world. It is not a tip box for enriching my bank account.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, giving back to others has been a lifelong passion. And while monetary donations are swell, there are many ways to make positive things happen in the world around us. Pass the Plate explores these and, I hope, may connect you with a larger community of thoughtful activists, some of whom you’ll find throughout this website in other articles.
That’s All Folks!
That’s it for now. You’re relieved—I know. Me, too!
As I said at the onset, check back to this article often since changes will appear regularly.
So, welcome to the neighborhood! Don’t forget to check out those rules of the road!
